The eight Etudes, Op. 42, are among Scriabin’s most rewarding piano works — works whose nascent modernity point toward the mystical and often weird compositional ideas of his final years. The music here is still post-Romantic, but sounds overripe, pushing out toward new horizons, harmonically, rhythmically, and thematically
All of the eight etudes from the Opus 42 were published in 1903. The one in the video (No 4) is in F-sharp major and features a lovely theme whose romantic manner sounds a bit perfumed, as if to conceal inner decay. The piece is typical of Scriabin, reaching out beyond an expressive language not quite suited to the music.
The following is said about this etude:
“One of my favorite etudes of Scriabin— the harmonies shift so finely between major and minor… like a child’s mobile, suspended – continuously revolving, splashing colorful shadows around a room.”
