Composer: Franz Schubert
Artists: Diogenes Quartet

S chubert’s early string quartets raise a number of questions, as well as suggesting an intriguing level of experimentation on
the young composer’s part. Firstly, there is
the question of lost material. The lack of
precise information on the compositional
and biographical context of the Five
Minuets and Five German Dances (marked
‘Vol.2’ by Schubert), and of the two Quartet
Movements D68, gives us room to speculate
that they may originally have been
accompanied by a previous volume and
additional movements respectively, now
lost in the mists of musical history. The
precise thinking behind the multiple
versions of some of the Minuets and Dances
is also unexplained, which is why the
listener is treated on this album to two
sharply contrasting ‘bonus’ versions, and
has the opportunity to decide for
themselves which fit more comfortably into
the set.

Early experimentation is the key theme of the Quartet D18, written when the composer was just 13 years old. Besides
being of biographical interest, as we see
Schubert grappling with fundamental
compositional concepts for the first time,
this experimentation also yields unexpected
and interesting musical results. The Quartet
Movements D68, meanwhile, are
fascinating in their resourceful expansion of
fairly minimal melodies and motifs.Tracklist:
