In this video, I do an in-depth structural analysis of Wagner’s only mature piano sonata. Don’t worry if it is hard to follow the motivic analysis—the piece is still enjoyable without catching all the details. This sonata is in only one movement—but it is packed with interesting details and interconnections.
I also devote some time to discussing the role of textual fidelity throughout musical history, the (relatively) recent trend towards exact score reproduction, and how this might be somewhat at odds with interpreting pre-20th century composers.
Feel free to comment if you have thoughts about this topic. I didn’t go anywhere near addressing all the possible ramifications of this issue! I will continue to talk about this and other issues relating to the contemporary classical pianist in later videos as well.
