Friedrich Burgmüller: Rondo alla Turca, Op.68 No.3

From “La Corbeille de Roses (Basket of roses) – 4 Morceaux brillantes & faciles”
———————————————————————————————————————-
The German composer (Johann) Friedrich Burgmüller (1806-74) trained in his own country but moved to France in 1832, and settled there, becoming a French citizen. He was a successful piano teacher and composer of salon pieces and studies. Although the other pieces in this set (clearly aimed at young ladies’ drawing rooms) are forgotten, this one remains popular – and I am by no means the first to put it on YouTube (I particularly like the 2009 video by a young lad called Evan, who puts the piece over with a ‘joie de vivre’ that I would find hard to copy!). I put my performance here to invite comparison with the Turkish rondo by Steibelt, which I uploaded in September 2012. Incidentally, this is not a difficult piece except for some rapid chord leaps, and also the registration problem with some pianos (including mine) of projected the melody in the weaker upper register over the repeated chords in the middle register. My thumbnail shows a details from a (colourized) illustration of musicians in Ottoman Aleppo (mid-18th century).
